Keçmiş davamedici zamandan hər hansı bir hadisənin keçmişdə baş vermdiyini və müəyən müddətdə davametdiyini bildirmək üçün istifadə olunur:
It is 6 o'clock now.

Sarah is at home.

She is watching television.
At 4 o'clock she wasn't at home. She was at the sports club.

She was playing tennis.

She wasn't watching television.

Keçmiş davamedici zaman was/were fel -ing şəklində düzəlir:
What were you doing at 11.30 yesterday? Were you working?

'What did he say?'     'I don't know. I wasn't listening.'

It was raining, so we didn't go out.

In 1985 we were living in Canada.

Today she's wearing a skirt, but yesterday she was wearing trousers.

I woke up early yesterday. It was a beautiful morning. The sun was shining and the birds were singing.

am/is/are fel -ing (present) -> was/were fel -ing (past):
I'm working (now).                                                               I was working at 10.30 last night.

It isn't raining (now).                                                       It wasn't raining when we went out.

What are you doing (now)?                                    What were you doing at three o'clock?

The city is now called Thatcherville. Formerlyit was Grabtown.    [used when something has changed its name, state, etc.]

While I waited, I read the newspaper.    [or, more formal: While waiting, I read...; the waiting and reading happen together.] 

As I was driving to work, I saw an accident.   [As describes the background when something happens in the foreground.]

During the war, I lived in Dublin.    [does not specify how long]

Throughout the war, food was rationed.    [from beginning to end] 

She was entering at the very time / the very moment I was leaving.   [These two are stronger and more precise than as or just as.]

After I'd locked up, I went to bed.    [or, more formal: After locking up... ; we do not usually say 'After having locked up...'.] 

We went to the castle. Then we caught a bus to the. beach. First we went to the theatre. After that, we had a meal.

He fell ill and was admitted to hospital. He died soon afterwards.   [In these two examples, after that and afterwards are interchangeable.] 

Following my visit to Peking, I bought lots of books about China.    [fairly formal]

As soon as we've packed we can leave,   [immediately after]

I stayed in that hospital the time (that) I broke my leg.

I met Polly at Ken's wedding. On that occasion she was with a different man.
